About

Opened in 1989, Tokyo Sea Life Park is entered through a striking glass dome by architect Yoshio Taniguchi (later of MoMA New York) that seems to float above a pool merging into the bay. Below, the centrepiece is a 2,200-tonne ring tank where schools of bluefin and other tuna race around you, a sight few aquariums anywhere can match. Other galleries cover the worlds oceans, from the Pacific to Antarctica, a large penguin enclosure with Humboldt and other species, a seabird cliff with puffins, and a Tokyo Bay section. The Tokyo government is building a new aquarium next door targeted for around 2028, and the current building continues to operate until then. Entry is cheap for a world-class aquarium, and free on 4 May, 1 October and 10 October.
