About

Tucked into the backstreets of Higashi-Tateishi, Kumano Shrine has a tradition that it was founded around 1050 by Abe no Seimei, the celebrated onmyoji (court diviner) who is the hero of countless novels, films and anime. Fitting that legend, the precinct is enclosed in a pentagonal plan echoing Seimeis five-pointed star emblem, which also appears on the shrines lanterns and goshuin. It is a modest neighbourhood shrine with a calm atmosphere and old trees, and a good contrast to the boisterous drinking lanes of nearby Tateishi. Fans of Seimei-themed fiction and spiritual-spot hunters make the pilgrimage.
