About

Tateishi is known as the drinkers holy land of downtown Tokyo, and the Nakamise arcade on the south side of the station is its core: a cramped, roofed alley born from a 1946 black-market, with fishmongers, pickle shops and croquette counters squeezed between bars that open from the early afternoon. Uchida (offal skewers), Sakae-zushi (standing sushi) and Torifusa (fried half-chickens) are nearby institutions with queues. Prices are famously low: "senbero" means getting drunk for 1,000 yen. The north side of the station was demolished in 2023 for redevelopment and the south side is also slated for rebuilding with the Keisei elevation project, so check the current state before you go and visit soon.
