About

Tochinishiki Kiyotaka (1925-1990) was born in Koiwa and rose to become the 44th yokozuna, whose rivalry with Wakanohana defined the golden "Tochi-Waka" era of sumo in the 1950s; he later headed the Japan Sumo Association and oversaw the building of the current Ryogoku Kokugikan. Koiwa honours him with a bronze statue by sculptor Takeharu Furukawa inside the station, showing him in ceremonial dress. Locals say "meet at Tochinishiki", and the statue is a nice glimpse of the areas pride in its sumo heritage before you head out to the shopping streets.
