Okamotoya Baiten (Jigoku-mushi Pudding) 岡本屋売店
Myoban cafe that made 'jigoku-mushi purin', custard pudding steamed in volcanic vapour, famous across Japan. Eat it on the terrace above the steaming valley.
Onsen-tamago udon: ¥650
About
Okamotoya has been steaming its custard pudding in the natural geothermal steam of Myoban since 1988, using the same recipe of eggs, milk and sugar with a bittersweet caramel; the steam's gentle heat gives a dense, smooth texture. It sparked the 'hell-steamed pudding' craze that now has copies at every hell. The little roadside shop and cafe also serves onsen-tamago udon, egg sandwiches made with steam-cooked eggs, jigoku parfaits and pudding soft-serve, and the terrace looks down over the yunohana huts and the valley. Just across from the Jizo-yu-mae bus stop in Myoban.
