Oniyama Jigoku (Crocodile Hell) 鬼山地獄
Steaming hell where dozens of crocodiles have been bred since 1923 using the spring's heat, lounging in concrete pens beside the boiling water.
Common ticket (elementary/junior high): ¥1,200
About
Oniyama Jigoku is the oddest of the seven. In 1923 the owners realised the vent's constant warmth was ideal for keeping reptiles and began breeding crocodiles, the first such venture in Japan; today dozens of crocodiles and alligators doze in pens around the steaming pond, and feeding sessions draw crowds. The hell itself is powerful, with strong vapour pressure that was once used to drive a tram. It's more zoo than scenery, so treat it as a fun 15-minute stop between Kamado and Shiraike.
