Oniishibozu Jigoku (Shaven Monk Hell) 鬼石坊主地獄
Hell of boiling grey mud where bubbles swell and pop like the shaven heads of monks. Next door to Umi Jigoku, with its own day-bath, Oniishi no Yu.
Common ticket (elementary/junior high): ¥1,200
About
Oniishibozu Jigoku is a set of pools of thick grey hot mud that blister up into round domes before bursting with a soft plop, which is why they were likened to the shaven heads (bozu) of Buddhist monks. It is quieter and more intimate than its neighbour Umi Jigoku, with walkways through a mossy garden, a free foot bath and the Oniishi no Yu bathhouse attached (separate fee), so you can soak after viewing. The mud pools are hypnotic: stand still and wait for the next bubble.
Highlights
- Bubbling grey mud forming monk-head domes
