About

Myoban is the steamiest corner of Beppu, and Yunosato is where you see why: rows of low thatched sheds (yunohana-goya) in which volcanic gas seeps up through a bed of blue clay to grow yunohana, natural bath-salt crystals, using a method dating to the 1700s and recognised as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. You can peer into the demonstration hut for free and buy the crystals to take home. The day-bath building has a large rock-lined outdoor pool of cloudy, sulphur-scented water facing down the valley, plus bookable private baths. The shop and cafe sell yunohana products, jigoku-mushi pudding and dango-jiru.
