About

Of the seven Hells of Beppu (jigoku, boiling hot springs for viewing, not bathing), Umi Jigoku is the showpiece. The pond's startling cobalt blue comes from iron sulphate dissolved in water that wells up from about 200 m below at around 98°C, sending clouds of steam across a large garden. Geothermal heat warms greenhouses where giant Victoria water lilies and tropical water lilies grow (flowering May to early November, best in the morning); on three days around Obon in August small children can sit on a giant lily pad. A smaller red pond, a free foot bath, an exhibition room on how hells form and the Gokuraku Manju shop, steaming buns in the hell's vapour since 1954, round it out. Umi Jigoku is designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and sits at the start of the Kannawa cluster, so most people buy the common ticket here.
