Tokyu Plaza Kamata Rooftop Kamata-en 東急プラザ蒲田 屋上かまたえん
A free-entry rooftop playground on the Kamata station building with Tokyo's only rooftop Ferris wheel, the "Ferris Wheel of Happiness", running since the 1960s and saved by local campaigning.
About
Department-store rooftop amusement parks were a Showa-era treat for Japanese families, and almost all have vanished. Kamata's survives on top of Tokyu Plaza above the station, where the little "Shiawase no Kanransha" (Ferris Wheel of Happiness), about 10 m tall with nine gondolas, has turned since the 1960s. When the building was renovated in 2014 the ride was kept after locals pleaded for it. Entry to the rooftop is free; you pay a few hundred yen per ride for the wheel and small kiddie attractions. A ride takes about three and a half minutes and gives a gentle view over the rooftops of Kamata.
