Toriman Honten (Kamata) 鳥万 本店
A huge, bustling Kamata izakaya steps from the station with a menu of 200-plus dishes, cheap yakitori and an after-work crowd that has made it a local institution.
About
Toriman is the kind of taishu sakaba (people's tavern) every Tokyo neighbourhood once had and few still do at this scale: long communal tables, shouted orders, paper menus papering the walls and a seemingly endless list of dishes, from charcoal yakitori and sashimi to tempura, nikomi stew and fried everything. Prices are notably low, which keeps it packed with salarymen and old-timers from opening time. It sits on the Suzuran-dori arcade just off Kamata's west exit, close to Bourbon Road, so it makes a natural first stop for an evening of Kamata drinking, or a hearty dinner before heading back to the airport.
