About

Kamata is Tokyo's gyoza town, and its signature hanetsuki (winged) gyoza, pan-fried dumplings joined by a lacy, crackling skirt of starch, spread from a handful of family-run Chinese restaurants opened by returnees from Dalian. Kangei is one of the three founding houses along with Nihao and Konparu, and many locals rate its gyoza the juiciest: thin skins, a garlicky pork filling and a wide golden wing you snap apart. The rest of the menu is classic Japanese-Chinese comfort food, from shrimp chilli to Dalian-style dishes, at prices that feel decades old. It sits on the ground floor of the Ota City Life Center, east of the station, marked by red lanterns and a queue at peak times.
