About

On reclaimed land near Ryutsu Center and the Ota Market, birds colonised the empty plots so enthusiastically that the city turned them into a sanctuary. Freshwater ponds, reed beds and a tidal flat attract herons, egrets, kingfishers, cormorants, migrating sandpipers and ducks by the hundred in winter. Observation hides with free telescopes and volunteer guides let you watch without disturbing anything, and the nature centre explains what you see. It is beautifully quiet, full of retirees with lenses, and wholly unknown to visitors.
