About

Kyotei (boat racing) is one of Japan's four legal forms of public gambling, and Heiwajima is one of three courses in Tokyo. Six one-person hydroplanes blast three laps around a 600 m course, jostling at the turns at up to 80 km/h, and the whole race takes under two minutes. Entry costs ¥100, bets start at ¥100, and the stands are a slice of working-class Tokyo: newspapers, pencils and pockets full of tickets. The modern grandstand has reserved seating floors, cheap food and a theatre, and big-name SG races draw huge crowds. Even if you do not bet, the noise and spray from the waterside fence are worth the trip, and it is next to Heiwajima Onsen for a soak afterwards.
