Takagiya Rouho 高木屋老舗
Shibamatas best-known kusa-dango shop since the Meiji era, where the Tora-san cast took breaks during filming; eat fresh mugwort dumplings with sweet bean paste in the old tatami tea room.
Kusa-dango box (takeaway): ¥800
About
Founded in the early Meiji period on the Taishakuten sando, Takagiya Rouho is the shop everyone associates with Shibamatas signature sweet: kusa-dango, soft rice dumplings kneaded with fragrant yomogi (mugwort) and topped with smooth bean paste. The shop served as a rest stop for actor Kiyoshi Atsumi and the Otoko wa Tsurai yo crew, and photos and signed boards line the walls. You can buy boxes to take away from the shop front, or sit in the old tea room on both sides of the street for dango with green tea or seasonal sweets. Its simple, inexpensive and the definitive taste of Shibamata.
