Shibamata Taishakuten Sando 柴又帝釈天参道
A 200 m Showa-era temple approach from Shibamata Station to Taishakuten, lined with wooden shops selling kusa-dango, senbei, eel and toys: the street of the Tora-san films.
About
From the Tora-san statue at Shibamata Station, the sando curves for about 200 metres to Taishakutens great gate, lined with two-storey wooden shops that look much as they did in the 1960s. Dango makers pound and roll green mugwort kusa-dango in their front windows, senbei makers grill crackers by hand, a candy maker taps out sticky "kan-kan" ame, and eel restaurants send smoke into the street. Several shops claim links to the Kurumaya of the films. Weekend mornings are lively with day-trippers; on the 5th of each month and on koshin days the temples fairs swell the crowds. The street was part of the Shibamata area designated Tokyos first Important Cultural Landscape in 2018.
