About

Formally Daikyoji, Shibamata Taishakuten was founded in 1629 and is forever linked to Tora-san, the wandering hero of the 48-film 'Otoko wa Tsurai yo' series, whose hometown this was. The approach, Taishakuten Sando, is a nostalgic lane of kusa-dango (mugwort dumpling) shops, eel restaurants and sweet stalls. Inside, the main attraction is the Taishakudo hall, whose outer walls are wrapped in ten huge carved panels depicting Lotus Sutra parables, made by master carvers over a decade in the 1920s and 30s and now protected behind glass in a viewing gallery. The adjoining Suikei-en garden is a meticulous pond garden viewed from covered corridors. Edo River and the Yagiri no Watashi rowing ferry are a short walk away.
