About
Japans first subway opened between Ueno and Asakusa in 1927, and car 1001, the lemon-yellow carriage that started it, now sits restored in this museum right beneath Kasai Stations tracks. You enter through real ticket gates, then explore the original Marunouchi Line red car with its sine-wave stripes, a full-size tunnel section showing how shield machines dig, displays on construction and ventilation, and a large diorama of the network. Driving simulators of the Chiyoda, Ginza and other lines are the big draw for kids (and grown-up train fans), so weekend queues form early. Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, it remains one of Tokyos best-value museums.
