About

Nishi-Kasai looks like any bayside Tokyo suburb, but its high-rise apartments house thousands of Indian residents, many of whom came in the late 1990s to work on Y2K and banking systems, attracted by the Tozai Line's direct link to Otemachi. The result is the closest thing Tokyo has to a Little India: Indian groceries piled with lentils, spices and frozen parathas, restaurants serving dosa, thali and biryani cooked for homesick regulars rather than Japanese tastes, an Indian international school and community centres. Every autumn the neighbourhood hosts Diwali in Tokyo, with dance, food stalls and fireworks. It is a residential area, so explore with curiosity and modesty, ideally with an appetite.
