About

In the 1960s the Furukawa was a polluted drainage ditch. In 1973 Edogawa ward rebuilt it as a clean, shallow stream that people could actually touch, coining the concept of the shinsui koen ("park for getting close to water") that spread across Japan. The result is a lush 1.2 km ribbon running through a quiet residential district near Ichinoe and Mizue, lined with willows, cherries and maples, with stepping stones, little falls, wooden bridges and benches. On summer afternoons local children splash in the ankle-deep water. Ward officials still cite it as the model for Edogawas long network of greenways, and it is one of the most pleasant urban walks in eastern Tokyo.
