About

The Shinkawa canal was dug in the Edo period to carry salt from Gyotoku to Edo. Edogawa ward rebuilt both banks as the Shinkawa Senbonzakura ("thousand cherry trees") promenade, completed in 2015, with 718 trees of 21 varieties, arched wooden footbridges and stone paving that evoke an old canal town. At the western end, the Shinkawa Nishi-Suimon Plaza has a 15.5 m wooden fire lookout tower modelled on those of Edo; you can climb it on weekends and holidays (daily during cherry season) for a view along the canal. Shinkawa Sakura-kan, a Japanese-style rest house in the middle, serves tea and hosts events. Late March brings the Shinkawa Senbonzakura festival, but the canal is lovely year round.
