About

Built in the same year as Tange's Yoyogi National Gymnasium, the Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Tokyo is a bold sculpture of eight hyperbolic paraboloid walls clad in shining stainless steel. From above it forms a cross; inside, the bare concrete walls sweep up 40 metres to meet in a cross of light, and slim floor-to-ceiling windows pour daylight onto the altar. The acoustics are superb, and the Italian-built pipe organ is used for regular recitals. Outside stand a separate 60-metre bell tower and a replica of the Lourdes grotto. Architecture fans make pilgrimages here, yet it sits in a quiet residential corner of Sekiguchi, so on a weekday you may have that extraordinary space nearly to yourself.
