About

Chinzanso, the 'villa of the camellia hill', began in 1878 as the estate of Prince Yamagata Aritomo, who laid out the strolling garden on the slopes above the Kanda River. The Fujita family bought it in 1918 and in 1925 brought here the Entsukaku, a three-storey wooden pagoda from Chikurinji temple in Hiroshima. It is now a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property. Today the garden of roughly 16 acres surrounds a grand hotel and wedding venue. It is crossed by streams and stone paths and dotted with old lanterns and stone Buddhas. Since 2020, the hotel's 'Tokyo Unkai' fog show has released mist from hundreds of nozzles several times a day, filling the valley and swirling around the pagoda. At night the garden is lit, and in June wild fireflies come out along the stream. Le Jardin lounge looks over it all for afternoon tea, and the restaurants in the garden include a soba house and a teppanyaki pavilion.
