About

Eastern Tokyo sits on deposits of ancient plant matter that tint groundwater the colour of strong tea, and Edogawa ward has some of the best kuroyu (black water) sento in the city. Tsurunoyu in Funabori is a favourite: its tea-black natural hot spring flows straight into the indoor bath and an outdoor rotenburo, it has a sauna (extra fee) and the classic sento layout, and it costs the same as any Tokyo bathhouse. The water leaves skin smooth and the atmosphere is friendly and local. Funabori has several more kuroyu sento within walking distance, so bath-hopping is an option.
