About

Shibamata is the hometown of Tora-san, the wandering salesman from the record-breaking film series 'Otoko wa Tsurai yo' (48 films between 1969 and 1995). In the forecourt of the small Keisei Kanamachi Line station stands a bronze statue of Tora-san with his trunk, turning to look back, unveiled in 1999; in 2017 a statue of his sister Sakura was added, seeing him off, recreating a scene from the films. The station, served by a short three-stop branch line, sets the tone for the old-fashioned Taishakuten approach, a lane of dango and senbei shops leading to the temple (listed separately). Keisei trains here are short and slow, and the whole area feels like a set from the Showa era.
