About

MOT reopened in 2019 after renovation and is the city's main public venue for postwar and contemporary art. The long, steel-and-glass building in Kiba Park has an enormous entrance atrium, a sunken courtyard and very high-ceilinged galleries that suit large installations. The MOT Collection rotates works from Japanese postwar avant-gardists (Gutai, Mono-ha) to Roy Lichtenstein's Hair with Ribbon and contemporary Japanese and international artists, while big temporary exhibitions have covered everything from Hayao Miyazaki-adjacent animation art to Christian Dior and David Hockney. It is a great anchor for a day exploring Kiyosumi-Shirakawa's cafes and galleries.
