Kiyosumi Shophouse Row (Former Tokyo City Shophouses) 旧東京市営店舗向住宅
A row of 1928 concrete shophouses on Kiyosumi-dori, built after the Great Kanto Earthquake, now home to cafes and small shops in an atmospheric retro line.
About
Walk along Kiyosumi-dori beside Kiyosumi Gardens and stand on the pavement across the road from the row in Kiyosumi 3-chome: a continuous terrace of two- and three-storey shophouses with simple facades, shop signs at street level and homes above. Built by Tokyo City in 1928 as fire-resistant housing after the 1923 earthquake, they are one of the area's most photogenic retro streetscapes. Morning light from the east falls nicely on the facades. People still live and work here: shoot from the public pavement, do not enter private stairs or photograph residents.
