About

Iwasaki Yataro, founder of Mitsubishi, bought this former daimyo estate in 1878 and turned it into a 'kaiyu-style' landscape garden to entertain guests, shipping in famous rocks from across Japan by company steamers. Today the large Daisensui pond, islands, a Fuji-shaped hill and the elegant Ryotei teahouse (1909) built over the water make it one of Tokyo's most tranquil spots. The highlight is the iso-watari, a path of stepping stones along the water's edge where turtles, koi and herons come close. The Kiyosumi-Shirakawa area around it is Tokyo's coffee and gallery neighbourhood, home to the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
