About

Run by Koto City, this museum recreates the Sagacho neighbourhood of Fukagawa around 1842 at full scale inside a double-height hall. You walk unpaved lanes past a rice merchant's store, a waterside boatman's inn, a greengrocer, a fried-food stall and narrow nagaya tenements, and you can take off your shoes and step into the homes to examine the furnishings, cooking pots and futons. The lighting and sound effects cycle through a day, from roosters at dawn to evening lantern light, and there is a fire watchtower and a dog and cat on the roofs. Volunteer guides, some in English, explain details like the shared well and the ingenious toilets. It is less famous than the Edo-Tokyo Museum but more intimate and immersive.
