About

Mizumoto Park stretches along the Kosai lagoon (Ko-ai-ike) at Tokyo's north-eastern edge, and on a quiet morning its reed beds, willows and long poplar avenue feel more like Hokkaido than the capital. It is Tokyo's largest water park, with walking and cycling paths, wide lawns, a bird sanctuary, and a grove of about 1,800 metasequoias that turns rust-orange in late November. In June its iris garden, with some 200,000 plants, is one of the largest in the Kanto region, and a free iris festival fills the park. It is a long way from central Tokyo, which is precisely why Katsushika locals love it: plenty of space, picnics, fishing and barbecues, and almost no tourists.
