Shibamata Edogawa Riverbank (Tora-sans Riverbank) 柴又の江戸川河川敷
The grassy Edogawa embankment behind Taishakuten, where nearly every Tora-san film opens with him strolling home; wide skies, the Yagiri ferry and sunset views over Chiba.
About
Behind the Tora-san Museum the land rises onto the Edogawa embankment, and suddenly the city falls away: a broad river, grass slopes, baseball fields, the Yagiri no Watashi rowboat landing, and the Matsudo side across the water. This is the landscape every Otoko wa Tsurai yo film uses for its opening scenes, and locals still sprawl here on sunny afternoons. Shibamata Park, built into the embankment, links the museum with the riverside, and at golden hour the river and sky turn deep orange, a scene straight out of Showa cinema. Bring a picnic of kusa-dango from the sando.
