About

Founded in 1276, Kameari Katori Shrine enshrines Futsunushi and other war deities and is known for "winning at anything", which has made it a shrine for sports. A dosojin (roadside guardian) in the grounds became associated with strong legs after people began offering straw sandals, so runners come before the Tokyo Marathon and football players for luck; the "beautiful legs" angle also draws a younger crowd. Because the towns name means "there are turtles", the guardians at the hall are koma-game (turtles) rather than lion-dogs, turtles appear on the offertory box and on goshuin stamps, and the omamori come in turtle-shell shapes. Fans of the manga Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-mae Hashutsujo will find a statue of the boyhood Ryotsu with friends here, part of the towns trail of 15 bronze characters.
