About

Kasai Shrine was founded in 1185 as the tutelary shrine of the 33 villages of the Kasai estate, the medieval domain that covered todays Katsushika and Edogawa wards. It is a calm, leafy precinct near the Edogawa embankment in Higashi-Kanamachi, with a handsome main hall and a large stone torii. Its fame comes from Kasai-bayashi: in the 18th century a priest here taught villagers a style of festival music with taiko drums and flute that spread across Edo and became the basis of the matsuri-bayashi still heard at Tokyo festivals; it is designated an intangible cultural property. Performances accompany the shrines main festival and several other events through the year. It is also a lucky shrine for career success (the god of Kasais founder Kasai Kiyoshige) and an easy stop on a walk from Kanamachi to Shibamata.
