Kanamachi Water Intake Towers 金町浄水場 取水塔

Two Western-style intake towers standing in the Edogawa river near Shibamata, the older one from 1941 with a copper-domed cap: an unmistakable river landmark seen in the Tora-san films.

About

The Kanamachi purification plant draws water for much of eastern Tokyo from the Edogawa, and its intake towers rise straight out of the river just upstream of Shibamata. The No. 2 tower, built in 1941, has a classical body topped by a dome-like hat, and the No. 3 tower (1964) echoes its form, giving the pair the look of two chess pieces in the water. They are recognised as Tokyos Historic Buildings and appear in many Tora-san film scenes along the river. The embankment path from Shibamata to Kanamachi gives the best views, with sunsets behind the towers in autumn and winter.
