About
Southern Tokyo's Ota Ward sits on ancient plant deposits that turn groundwater the colour of black coffee, rich in humic acid and silky on the skin. Kamata Onsen is the classic place to try it: inner baths of near-black natural spring water, including a famously hot tub (around 46°C), a sauna, and an old-school upstairs hall with a karaoke stage and food where locals spend all day. A short trip from Haneda Airport and a world away from central Tokyo's spa resorts.
Highlights
- Natural kuroyu black-water hot spring
- Extra-hot bath for the brave (~46°C)
- Showa-era upstairs banquet hall with karaoke
- Close to Haneda Airport for a pre/post-flight soak
Tips
- Pair with a cheap gyoza crawl in Kamata (hanetsuki gyoza)
- Bring your own towel or rent at the desk
- Confirm hours by phone before going; they've varied
