About

For generations the Tajima family served as nanushi (headman) of Ichinoe village, and their homestead survives intact in a residential district of Harue-cho. The main house, thought to date from the mid-18th century, has a massive thatched roof, a wide doma earthen-floored kitchen with a kamado stove, and tatami reception rooms where officials were received. Around it are a nagaya-mon gate, storehouses, a bamboo grove and a moat-like pond, so you get a rare sense of what the Edogawa delta looked like when it was paddy land supplying Edo. It is a designated Tokyo historic site, run by the ward with modest entry and seasonal events such as hina doll displays.
