About

Kunio Kobayashi is one of Japan's most celebrated bonsai artists, a four-time winner of the Prime Minister's Award, and Shunkaen in Edogawa Ward is his home, studio and museum. The grounds hold an astonishing collection of junipers, pines and maples in a traditional house and garden, including trees older than Tokyo itself, displayed in tokonoma alcoves as they would be in a fine home. Apprentices, many from overseas, work quietly among them. The bonsai workshop gives you instruction, materials and tools to pot and shape your own small tree, with admission included; staff speak English and Chinese. Note that customs rules usually prevent taking soil and live plants abroad, so the class suits residents or those happy to gift the tree locally, the museum visit alone is worth the trip for anyone interested in Japanese aesthetics.
