About

Edo furin are thin, slightly rough-rimmed glass chimes whose tinkle is the soundtrack of Japanese summers. Shinohara Furin Honpo has made them in Edogawa Ward since 1915 using the same mouth-blown method. The workshop experience has you blow a bubble of glass at the furnace with a craftsman's help, then paint it, Edo-style designs are painted on the inside of the bell so the colours stay glossy. A shorter option lets you paint a pre-blown chime. It's one of Tokyo's most charming and least touristy crafts, run by the family in a working factory; English is limited but the process is visual. Note the workshop pauses in high summer when the factory is busiest, and finished chimes are fragile, so pack carefully.
