Osaka Castle Nishinomaru Garden 大阪城西の丸庭園
A wide lawn inside Osaka Castle's western bailey with about 300 cherry trees and the best full view of the Main Tower above its stone walls; the classic hanami and photo spot of the castle.
About
The Nishinomaru (western bailey) was where Hideyoshi's widow Kita-no-Mandokoro lived; today it is an open lawn of about 6.5 hectares surrounded by stone walls and turrets, including the Important Cultural Property Sengan-yagura near the Otemon gate. Because the lawn sits below and to the west of the Main Tower, it gives an unobstructed view of the keep over its tall walls, which makes it the favourite photo spot for cherry blossoms in early April. The paid area keeps the grounds tidy and calmer than the free parts of the park, and in spring there are evening illuminations with longer hours. The Osaka Geihinkan (guest house) restaurant is also in the garden.
Highlights
- Full view of the Main Tower above its stone walls

Tips
- Go at opening during cherry season, or pick the evening illumination for fewer families.
- Bring a picnic sheet: the lawn is designed for hanami.
- Check the official site for the spring special fee and hours.
