About

Toyotomi Hideyoshi began Osaka Castle in 1583 as the grandest fortress in Japan; it was destroyed by the Tokugawa in the Summer Siege of 1615, rebuilt by them on top of the buried original, and that keep burned after a lightning strike in 1665. The current Main Tower was rebuilt in 1931 with public donations, in reinforced concrete, modelled on the Toyotomi-era tower in a famous folding screen, with black lacquer, gold tigers and gilded fish (shachi) on the roof. Inside, eight floors of exhibits cover Hideyoshi's life, armour, folding screens with miniature dioramas of the 1615 siege and a large collection of Toyotomi letters, topped by an outdoor observation gallery. The stone walls around it are as impressive as the keep: some blocks, such as the Tako-ishi at the Sakuramon gate, weigh over 100 tonnes. The tower stands in the middle of the vast Osaka Castle Park.
