About

Housed in a tower beside the NHK Osaka building, the Osaka Museum of History takes you by elevator to the 10th floor, where the Daigokuden hall of the ancient Naniwa Palace has been recreated at full scale, red pillars, costumed court officials and all, with picture windows overlooking the excavated site below and Osaka Castle beyond. You then descend through time: the 9th floor covers the merchant city of the Edo period with detailed miniature townscapes, kabuki and the rice exchange, and the 7th floor shows modern Osaka of the 1920s and 30s, when it was the largest city in Japan, with recreated streets and shops. The 8th floor has hands-on archaeology. In the basement you can see the remains of a 5th-century warehouse uncovered under the site. It is one of the best-value museums in Osaka and an excellent rainy-day partner to the castle.
