About

Hideyoshi rose from a foot soldiers son to ruler of Japan and built the first Osaka Castle, so his shrine here is a natural stop on the way up to the keep. Originally founded in Kyoto after the Meiji Restoration, a branch was established in Osaka in 1879 and moved to its present spot inside the castle grounds in 1961. It honours Hideyoshi, his son Hideyori and his brother Hidenaga. The large statue of Hideyoshi in court robes stands before the hall, and the gourd (hyotan), Hideyoshi's battle standard, appears on ema plaques and charms, symbolising success. Many visitors come for shusse (getting ahead in life) prayers before job interviews and promotions. The adjoining stone garden, Hideyoshi's "Hiun no Niwa", was designed by the great modern garden-maker Shigemori Mirei.
