Keihan Uji Station 京阪 宇治駅
The terminus of Keihan's Uji Line, rebuilt in 1995 by architect Akira Wakasa as a sculptural concrete drum with a great circular opening, set right on the east bank of the Uji river by Uji Bridge. One of the most striking small stations in Kansai.
About
Most visitors arrive in Uji by JR, but the Keihan terminus is the better entrance and a small architectural gem. Designed by Akira Wakasa and completed in 1995, it is a low, curving building of exposed concrete with a large circular motif and a light-filled concourse, and it was selected as one of the Kinki region's 100 notable stations. It stands at the east end of Uji Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in Japan, so you step out straight onto the river. From here the Tale of Genji walking trail leads up the east bank to Ujigami Shrine, and Byodo-in and the tea shops of Byodo-in Omotesando are just across the bridge.
