About

Murasaki Shikibu's Tale of Genji, written around 1000, closes with the "Uji chapters", set in this riverside town where aristocrats kept villas. Run by Uji City and renovated in 2018, the museum recreates the Heian world with a reconstructed ox-cart, a replica of a noble's room with sliding screens and clothing, and a gallery explaining the plot and its characters. The film theatre screens original short films on the Uji chapters. Exhibits have English explanations. It is a 10-minute walk from Byodo-in across the river near Ujigami Shrine, and provides context for the Heian sites around Uji.
