About

Long before Disney, Urayasu was a fishing village of clams, nori and boats moored along the Sakaigawa. Seiryu Shrine in Horie was the protector of that community, and it remains the heart of the old town with the Toyouke Shrine in neighbouring Nekozane. The main hall is decorated with fine wood carvings, and the stone lions and votive monuments were donated by fishermen and seaweed farmers. Every four years the Urayasu Mitsurisha Festival sees the three town shrines portable mikoshi tossed and shaken through the streets in a famously wild style. On ordinary days it is a quiet place to start a walk past the historic Udagawa and Otsuka houses and along the river.
