About

Walk ten minutes from Urayasu Station and the tower blocks give way to the narrow lanes of Moto-machi, the original fishing town. The Old Udagawa House (1869) was a merchant home that sold rice, fuel and sundries, later a post office and doctors clinic; its shop front, storehouses and tatami rooms are open free of charge, and it is the oldest house in Urayasu with a known construction date. Around the corner, the Old Otsuka House is a late-Edo thatched farmhouse of a family that both fished and farmed, designated a Chiba Prefecture tangible cultural property, with a raised floor to cope with floods. Volunteer guides are often on hand. Together with Seiryu Shrine and the Sakaigawa river they make a rewarding hour that shows a completely different Urayasu from Maihama.
