About

Until the 1960s Urayasu was a fishing town where most families gathered clams and farmed nori in the shallows of Tokyo Bay; land reclamation, the end of fishing rights and Tokyo Disneyland changed it utterly. This museum by the city hall tells that story. The highlight is the outdoor "Town of Urayasu", a full-scale reconstruction of streets around 1952 with relocated houses, a tempura shop, a boatbuilders workshop, a tobacco shop and wells, where volunteers in summer may let kids try games or show crafts. Indoors, the boat gallery has real bekabune (the flat one-person boats used to gather shellfish, also known from the novelist Shugoro Yamamotos Aobeka Monogatari). Entry is free, which makes it an excellent detour on a Disney trip.
