Sakaigawa River, Urayasu Moto-machi 境川(浦安元町)

The narrow tidal river that was once lined with fishing boats in old Urayasu, still flanked by small craft, bridges and a promenade: the best place to imagine the fishing town before Disney.

About

The Sakaigawa winds through the heart of old Urayasu, separating the districts of Horie and Nekozane before reaching the bay. Until the 1970s hundreds of small fishing and nori boats were moored here and the riverbanks were packed with fishermens homes and tsukudani shops. Today a promenade with cherries runs along it, small boats still bob at their moorings, and low bridges frame shots of the boats against the old townscape. It ties together Seiryu Shrine, the Old Udagawa and Old Otsuka houses and old shops, and makes for a lovely contrast with the Disney towers a few kilometres away.
