About

Run by Naritasan Shinshoji and set among the trees of Naritasan Park, this museum holds thousands of works of calligraphy, especially modern and contemporary pieces from the late Edo period onward, alongside historical scrolls and rubbings. Exhibitions rotate several times a year, mixing large-scale contemporary works, which can be startlingly abstract, with classical kana and kanji masterpieces. It is a quiet, air-conditioned counterpoint to the temple crowds and a good way to understand why handwriting is treated as fine art in Japan.
