About
Ideyu-zaka runs through the heart of Kannawa Onsen past the Kannawa Mushiyu steam bath and a free foot bath. Stand partway up the slope and shoot downhill for layers of steam drifting across the road, old inns and shop signs; plumes are biggest on cold, still mornings. Steam rising from gutters and stone walls along the way makes for great details as well.
Highlights
- Clouds of steam from vents along the street
- Old ryokan and shopfronts
- Foot bath and Kannawa Mushiyu nearby
- Strongest steam on cold mornings
Tips
- Winter mornings give the thickest steam.
- Some vents are very hot: do not lean on pipes or grilles.
- Combine with jigoku-mushi steam cooking for lunch.
